Climate change poses a particular challenge to sustainable multifunctional forestry with its dependence on site conditions and its long production periods. The extent, spatial and temporal distribution, and speed of climate change are expected to exceed the adaptive capacity of our tree species in many places. Forest enterprises and society in general are therefore well advised to take precautions against this risk. The silvicultural options for adapting forests to climate change range from siteappropriate forest conversion, stabilization of existing forests, to reduction or distribution of risks. Despite uncertainties, the knowledge gained so far allows the provision of decision support tools for climate adaptation, which are to be integrated into adaptive forest management. These tools will help avoid major planning errors and facilitate knowledge gains.
