Decoupled direct payments were for a long time an important instrument to support agriculture both in the US and in the EU. Their elimination in the US in the 2014 reform marks a break in the previous trend for agricultural policies of the US and the EU to become increasingly similar. With the help of convergence theory, the present study explains the political economy mechanisms behind this new divergence.
